Science on Tap

Science in the Community: Science on Tap! Why Haven’t We Found the Cure for Cancer?

Science on Tap is an avenue for adults to meet together (virtually) in a unique way to increase public awareness and pride in the research accomplishments of local scientists.

Our speaker for Friday’s event is Iraís Ortiz-Caraveo who is a Biomedical Engineering Masters student at The University of New Mexico currently working in the Department of Pathology for thr UNM School of Medicine as a research assistant. Iraís is 1st generation high school and college student and has also recently been published!

Why Haven’t We Found the Cure for Cancer?

Why does it takes so long to find treatments and why do those treatments tend to fail? Most people are pretty shocked to learn that we are quite limited (time, manpower, resources) in the ways we can conduct cancer research. Hollywood has created the illusion that answering these scientific questions is a smooth ride and that scientists have all the tools to get answers, when in reality we don’t. But, that does not mean that there isn’t a way; so science presses on in the search to find a cure.

Science on Tap is presented through a partnership between the nuclear engineering department at UNM, represented by Christopher Perfetti,  the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History, represented by Stephen Whitman and Explora, represented by Tory Hajny.

Science in the Community is a NM Science Fiesta event. Full event line up can be found on the Science Fiesta page.
