Home School Explorations Series for grades 6-8 (ages 11-14)

Be curious, discover, experiment!

Explora’s Home School Explorations Series offers your child a semester of weekly, hour-long experiential science, technology, and art programs. Each Exploration is facilitated by Explora educators. These are hour-long, materials-rich classes that actively engage every child in inquiry activities. In these classes, children will make discoveries in science, technology, engineering, art, and math through questioning, experiencing, and investigating. Children will be encouraged to build their own knowledge and cultivate skills such as observation, creativity, critical thinking, cooperative learning, communication, and innovation as they explore a different topic each week.

Fall 2020 Explorations Schedule

Ecology of the Forest

9/22
The forest floor has many stories to tell. Dig in the dirt and discover evidence of who and what is in it. Test soil samples for absorption and percolation, and find out how soil supports the health of the forest and the lives within it.

Plants Capturing Light

9/29
What are the factors that regulate photosynthesis? Experiment with leaf pigments, light intensity, and light frequency to shed light on nature’s own solar cells.

Raspberry Pi

10/6
Not that kind of pie! Explora the power of this tiny computer that can be used for almost anything and costs only $50. Explore coding languages, gaming, music making, and much more!

Music Math

10/13
You’ve probably enjoyed listening to your favorite music. Now you can unlock the mystery of its structure! Find the math in music as you design rhythm patterns, discover music fractions, and keep the beat while putting it all together.

Kaleidoscope Crazed

10/20
Explore the amazing properties of mirrors and lenses, and discover all the wonderful images and colorful patterns you get when angles and symmetry come into play. Design and build your own unique kaleidoscope.

Triangles and Tribulations

10/27
Have you always thought the triangle was just the shape between the circle and the square? It turns out that a triangle has some very important properties for engineering and construction. Find out more in this challenging trial-and-error exploration using triangles to construct games and roller coasters.

Building a Monument

11/3
Put tension to good use! Use your bodies to understand tension and other architectural forces in this constructive exploration. Discover elementary structural principles and model-building techniques as you create your own unique architectural structures.

Energy Transformers

11/10
These energizing activities offer exploration into the different forms of energy! Investigate how these forms are converted from one to another. Experiment with “Newton’s Cradles” and build wind turbines that produce electricity.

In Synch

11/17
Explore the phenomenon of resonance by snapping, plucking, or striking rubber bands, springs, rods, pendulums, and more to observe their natural springiness. Use techniques of matching natural frequencies to “magically” move pendulums, oscillate springs, and amplify vibrations of objects.

Stop Motion Animation

11/24

Explore persistence of vision with optical toys like zoetropes, flip books, thaumatropes, and a variety of computer programs. Use measurement skills and other applied math concepts to animate pictures and make them come alive!

Film Making

12/1
Explore balance, movement, and design by constructing sculptures in the style of Alexander Calder’s mobiles. Compare and contrast symmetry and asymmetry in design and weight, and explore cause and effect by trying to balance weights and physically work out visual choices.

Laser Cutting

12/8
Whhhaaaaaat???? Yeah that’s right we’re going to cut stuff with a laser! We’ll design artistic pieces and cut through paper, cardboard, wood, or acrylic  to put on display at home.
