In these classes, children will make discoveries in science, technology, engineering, art, and math through questioning, experiencing, and investigating. Children will be encouraged to build their own knowledge and cultivate skills such as observation, creativity, critical thinking, cooperative learning, communication, and innovation as they explore a different topic each week. MON Sept 18 / TUES Sept 19

Bees, butterflies, birds, moths, and bats all play an important role in the viability of our food sources and our ecosystem. What type of plants do different pollinators like? What are elements of a garden that encourages butterflies to visit? Discover the world of pollination in this exploration all about nature’s fertilizers!

Soil Searchers

MON Sept 25/TUES Sept 26

Want some dirt on dirt? Find out what soil and dirt are made of, investigate their properties, and unearth some surprising discoveries!

Water Filtration

MON Oct 2 / TUES Oct 3

How can we create cleaner water? Experiment with a variety of materials to filter water samples. Test your samples before and after for turbidity, hardness, and pH, and find out how effective different filtration methods may be.

Food Sleuths

MON Oct 9 /TUES OCt 10

What’s for dinner? Test a variety of foods to determine the presence of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and vitamins, Learn the roles these substances have in a healthy diet, and what they really do inside our bodies!

Chemical Changes

MON Oct 16 / TUES Oct 17

What’s the difference between a physical change and a chemical change? How do simple mixtures differ from chemical changes? Explore these differences and investigate several fascinating chemical changes.

Facts of the Matter

MON Oct 23/ TUES Oct 24

Atoms in motion–fast or slow–determine the states of matter we know. We’ll use liquid nitrogen and other materials to explore the properties of solids, liquids, and gasses.

Go with the Flow

MON Oct 30 / TUES Oct 31

What is Bernoulli’s Principle? Levitate balls and make an egg jump from one container to another to find out how airplanes fly and birds soar. The science of fluid dynamics is a great way to engage participants’ natural curiosities and connect them to the world.

Chance or Lucky Guess

MON Nov 6 / TUES Nov 7

By flipping coins, rolling dice, picking marbles from a jar, and collecting data on candy, we discover that some outcomes are predictable. We’ll run experiments, collect data, and determine the probabilities of certain outcomes for independent events.

Building a Monument

MON Nov 13 /TUES Nov 14

Tension in the room? Put it to good use! Participants will use their bodies to understand tension and other architectural forces in this constructive exploration. They also discover elementary structural principles and model-building techniques as they create their own unique architectural structures.

The Heat is On

MON Nov 20 / TUES Nov 21

Do we sometimes act like hot little molecules? We’ll use natural tendencies, along with some dramatic experiments, to understand how molecules transfer heat through conduction, convection, and radiation.

Exciting Electricity

MON Nov 27 / TUES Nov 28

Use batteries and wires to light a bulb, and explore open and closed circuits. Then make a gigantic complete circuit you won’t forget!

Crazy Light

MON Dec 4 /TUES Dec 5

Why do we see ourselves in mirrors? How are shadows made? Use light boxes to explore the basic properties of white and colored light, including reflection and refraction, and investigate the properties of lenses.
