Are you a 5th-8th grade student who wonders about space travel or science? Have you ever wanted to be an astronaut or scientist? Do you dream about space or enjoy plants but are not really sure that science is your thing? We want YOU to help real scientists and astronauts with Explorations in Extraterrestrial Botany! You’ll learn how plants and people survive and thrive in the extreme conditions of space (and Mars!?) as well as harsh New Mexico deserts. You will engineer solutions to growing food on a spaceship, and build your own biosphere terrarium. You’ll meet and work with real scientists, talk to an astronaut on the space station, and learn real measuring and data collecting skills.
Explorations in Extraterrestrial Botany program participants will:
- Learn from UNM professors and STEM professionals
- Engage with hands-on experiences and activities
- Collect and contribute real-world data to NASA
Program participants should be 11-15 years old and have an interest in science, plants, engineering, and/or math. Attendance at the majority of the classes is expected, as activities will build on each other. Participation is limited to 30 students.
