Spring Camp 2019

For Grades Pre-K–8

Camps spark learning during school breaks through investigation and discovery.

Monday, March 11 – Friday, March 15

Camps are single day camps. Sign up for as many days as you like! Each grade range will have its own unique investigations to keep imaginations active with science, technology, engineering, math, and art.

Pre-K half-day camps:

  • Hours: 9am-noon (aftercare unavailable for half-day camps)
  • Registration fee per child, per day:
    • Explora members $30
    • Non-members $40

K-6th grade full-day camps:

  • Hours: 9am-4pm
  • Registration fee per child, per day:
    • Explora members $60
    • Non-members $80

Tech Girls! 2 Day Camp, Grades 4-8

  • Hours: 9am-4pm
  • This camp is funded by Sandia National Laboratories and is offered at a discounted rate of $25 per camper for both days.

Engineering Roadways:  Become a civil engineer as you make simple cars, design road systems, and build structures to get you to your destination.

Tuesday, March 12, 9am-noon

Be a Mad Hatter:  Explore the science and art of hat design as you test materials, then design and construct your very own hat.

Wednesday, March 13, 9am-noon

Exploring Communities and BuildingsLook at the buildings around you. What do you see? Be an architect as you build structures and design communities.

Thursday, March 14, 9am-noon

Playful Puppets:  Become a puppet master! Experiment with various materials to create your own puppets, characters, and their exciting stories.

Friday, March 15, 9am-noon

Water Explorations:  Splish! Splash! Time to experiment with some watery science and math!

Little Green Thumbs: Let’s get our hands dirty as we plant flowers, examine plants at various stages of growth, and even dissect some seeds.

OR

Eureka!:  Make exciting discoveries using simple machines. Investigate the compelling characteristics of levers and pulleys, experiment with the dynamic principles of water displacement, buoyancy, and much more.

Wednesday, March 13, 9am-4pm

Airborne:  We’ll send things flying as we test planes, rockets, and catapults. Then become an Aeronautical engineer as you create objects that float and flip and build a parachute to safely land an egg.

Colorful Chemistry:  What happens when you mix pigments? What happens when you mix colored light? We’ll be using paint, water, light, and lenses to conduct some colorful chemistry experiments.

Intergalactic Adventures:  Our solar system is an amazing complex system consisting of  planets, comets, and much much more. Come explore as we test the science of outer space.

Artistic Robots: Combine art supplies with circuits, LEDs, and motors to see what kind of designs your robot will create.

Tuesday, March 12, 9am-4pm

Polymer Pizzazz: Get your hands in the mix as you concoct polymers, and question the boundary between solids and liquids.

Wednesday, March 13, 9am-4pm

Let’s Get Cooking: Become a kitchen chemist. Experiment with household materials, investigate reactions in a variety of foods, and even make some delicious pudding to taste.

Thursday, March 14, 9am-4pm

Blast Off: Design and test various rockets that soar as you experiment with inertia, thrust, propulsion, and aerodynamics.

Friday, March 15, 9am-4pm

Old-School Arcading: Go behind the scenes of carnival and arcade games to learn the science and engineering of the most popular ones. Then build your favorites and create our own carnival midway!

Burning Questions: Put your safety glasses on as we experiment with combustion, explore oxygen’s effect on flames, and even test how heat alters various materials and substances.

Tuesday, March 12, 9am-4pm

Robo Sports: Racing, wrestling, launching, and battling…Will your robot be up to the challenge?

Wednesday, March 13, 9am-4pm

Old-School Arcading: Go behind the scenes of carnival and arcade games to learn the science and engineering of the most popular ones. Then build your favorites and help create our own carnival midway!

Thursday, March 14, 9am-4pm

Bon Appetit: Master Chefs in the making, come perform some kitchen chemistry as we make some deliciously scientific treats. Make connections between ingredients and the foods we cook and eat everyday.

Friday, March 15, 9am-4pm

Farming for Fuels: How can we power our cars with something other than gasoline? Imagine driving up to a gas station and filling up with salt water! Would it work? Come experiment with power sources such as solar, hydrogen, magnets, and more.

Tech Girls! for Grades 4-8

This camp is funded by Sandia National Laboratories and is offered at a discounted rate of $25 per camper for both days.

Tech Girls!: ~ Be inspired and empowered! ~   Become a tech creator, not just a user, during this special two-day camp. Learn to code, use Micro:bits, create wearable technology, and design your own project to address real-world problems. Add to your programming skills, no matter your current experience level. No programming experience is required.

autismEXPLORA-tions Camp

Theme:  Engineering Heroes

Half-Day Camp: Monday, January 21, 9am-12pm or 1-4pm (Choose AM or PM)

Registration fee

  • Explora members $20
  • Non-members $30

Participants will become builders and architects, as they experiment with construction and destruction. They will test a variety of materials and strategies for strength and stability and test their structures against some detrimental disasters. This camp is designed for campers, ages 8-12, on the autism spectrum. Explora’s Camp Best Practices of Be Safe, Be Kind, and Be Curious as well as general camp policies, including independent toileting, apply to this camp. After registration, the Camp Manager will be in contact to request additional information in order to best support each camper.   • Before care: (Extra option), beginning at 8 am.
  • Activities: Classroom activities as described, plus exhibit exploration.
  • Food: Please pack morning & afternoon peanut-free snacks and lunch as appropriate.
  • Break time: Outside on the Explora playground, weather permitting.
  • Pick-up: 12 pm for Pre-K and 4 pm for for K-6th grade. Adults will be asked to show photo ID at pick-up.
  • After care: (Extra option) for K-6th, 4-5:30 pm.

Explora educators develop camp activities with children’s developmental levels in mind. Your children will have the opportunity to learn from, and work with older and younger peers and make new friends.
