April Theme:  Math in Money

12 Months of Math

The world of money includes banking, accounting, spending, budgeting, and saving. Math skills are essential to managing your money wisely now and over time. Aside from basic addition and subtraction, long term planning involves higher levels of math as well, as it requires identifying patterns and trends. Financial literacy will allow you to act with confidence when buying groceries, building credit, planning a trip, or saving for college.

Learning to manage money can be a challenge. This month our sponsor, Fidelity Investments, is hosting financial literacy workshops to help families learn how money works with activities on earning, spending, saving, and investing. There are lots of videos and other resources to check out on your own, too.

Math Talk

Topic:  Money Math and More.

How do you feel about money? Does is motivate you? Does it make you anxious? Money is more than credits and deductions to your bank account. The way you feel about money is developed over time from the first time you were handed a quarter or maybe the first time you asked to buy something at the store. Financial literacy is your ability to develop healthy feelings about money and confidence in smart spending, saving, and planning of your money.

Try it! Estimations

Counting money involves complex number sense skills as students are usually taught to organize coins, counting from the highest value to the lowest value. This method involves counting by 25s, then switching to counting by 10s, then counting by 5s and finally counting by 1s. As many ways as we learn to count, we can learn to count money. Often we “skip count” money, which works to a point. Below are a few suggestions on practicing to count coins. View ideas for counting coins Here.

Many adults have a challenged relationship with money. If this is true for you, you may have a hard time teaching financial literacy to your children. Foundations to financial literacy can be learned at any time, HERE are some exercises you can practice at home.
